Safety Planning Committee
In the 2008-2009
school year, Piner has seen some dramatic and much needed changes to its
Safety Committee, first starting off with the committee’s decision to split
in smaller divisions, with the “Committee Split Proposal”. This would
increase the amount of concentration on a certain group of issues. Along
with designating certain divisions to certain *Areas of Improvement* that go
along with the Safety Committee’s main goals and objectives.
From The Desk of The Incident Commander
Letter To The Parents From The Emergency Manager
Dear Parents,
The safety of
our students and employees at Piner High School is my top concern and
priority. The Piner High School Emergency Operations Plan has been developed
to safeguard students and employees and to maximize our ability to
effectively respond to a variety of emergencies. This plan was developed in
partnership with the Sonoma County Office of Education, the Santa Rosa
Police Department, the Santa Rosa Fire Department, and other local emergency
agencies. There are going to be some much needed and dramatic changes to our
safety committee and emergency services at Piner High School during this up
and coming 2009-2010 school year. I’d like to thank you for your patience
while we work to the best of our abilities to insure that Piner meets, and
raises the bar, for safety, set by the District and state departments. My
work on campus is to ensure that Piner High School qualifies as a safe and
reliable facility for learning and education.
Thank you,
Andrew Esch

The Student Involvement Program
A Program for Students at Piner High:
New to the committee and the first to be introduced in the district, the
Student Involvement Program allows students currently attending Piner High
School to join the Safety Planning Committee under a program designed to
involve the student body. Under command of the Incident Commander, the
students will learn how to help there designated divisions during an
emergency and train to perform first aid, search and rescue, evacuation and
building inspection duties. These duties would be needed after an earthquake
or emergency to ensure that all students and staff are taken care of, until
help from the governing authorities arrives.
The Student Involvement Program is a great way to teach students how to
react to an earthquake and other emergencies while teaching them how to be
prepared and alert. The program hopes to be fully operational in the 2009 -
2010 school year.
Emergency Preparedness Division
General Emergency Information For Parents:
The Emergency Operation Plan (EOP)
The Emergency
Operations Plan provides the framework for addressing emergencies that may
occur during school and business hours. The plan includes guidelines on how
to respond to natural disasters, weather-related emergencies, dangerous
persons/weapons on campus, civil unrest, and terrorism. The members of the
Safety Committee conduct on-site crisis training for school personnel
including command post and crisis communication issues, logistics, release
of information, sheltering, evacuation, students accounting/release, medical
response, media coverage, and building evaluations. There are evacuation
plans and periodic drills to assess the effectiveness of the emergency
response actions. A copy of this plan is not available for outside parties.
The On Campus Emergency Operation Center (EOC)
The Emergency
Preparedness Division has turned the old staff dining room on the “E” Wing
cafeteria into an On Campus Emergency Operations Center. This ensures
Piner’s functionality after an actual emergency, and supplies quick support
for city officials when the campus is used as a shelter. This room will
serve as the central nervous system for the school and control school
operations after an emergency, using communication equipment to stay in
contact with local agencies.
Evacuation of The School & The Release of Students
Students should
remain at school until the Incident Commander releases them. Students will
be released as soon as it has been determined that it is safe and
appropriate to do so.
As soon as it is
safe, students will be released. Students will remain under the supervision
of school personnel until they are released to a parent or guardian or adult
designated on the emergency form signed by a parent or guardian.
Students may be
moved to another location. The exact location from which students may be
picked up will be announced on the radio stations listed above.
